Background of the Study
Single-parenthood has emerged as a significant factor influencing students’ academic performance. In Eket Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State, children from single-parent households often face unique challenges, including reduced economic resources and limited emotional support (Eneyi, 2023). These challenges can adversely affect their academic achievement, leading to lower performance and diminished educational opportunities. Research indicates that the absence of a dual-parent support system may result in increased stress, decreased supervision, and limited access to educational resources (Inyang, 2024). Additionally, social stigma and the burden of household responsibilities can further impact students’ focus and motivation (Udoh, 2025). This study examines the specific ways in which single-parenthood influences academic performance, aiming to identify critical factors and propose interventions that could help mitigate the negative effects and enhance student outcomes in this context.
Statement of the Problem
In Eket, students from single-parent households are often at a disadvantage due to limited economic and emotional support, which adversely affects their academic performance (Eneyi, 2023). The challenges associated with single-parenthood, including increased household responsibilities and reduced supervision, contribute to lower academic achievement. This study seeks to explore the extent of these challenges and determine the impact of single-parenthood on educational outcomes, thereby providing insights into potential strategies for support and intervention to improve the academic success of these students.
Objectives of the Study:
To assess the impact of single-parenthood on academic performance.
To identify challenges faced by students from single-parent households.
To propose supportive interventions for enhancing academic outcomes.
Research Questions:
How does single-parenthood affect students’ academic performance?
What challenges do students from single-parent households face?
What interventions can improve their academic outcomes?
Research Hypotheses:
Single-parenthood negatively impacts academic performance.
Students from single-parent households experience higher levels of stress.
Supportive interventions can mitigate the negative effects of single-parenthood.
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it explores the impact of single-parenthood on academic performance, providing insights for educators and policymakers. The findings will inform the development of targeted support programs and interventions that address the unique challenges faced by students from single-parent households, ultimately aiming to improve their academic success and overall well-being.
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to examining the impact of single-parenthood on students’ academic performance in Eket Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State. It does not extend to other family structures or regions.
Definitions of Terms:
Single-Parenthood: A family structure in which a child is raised by one parent.
